Overview of the problem
The problem here is similar to that in the cellular agriculture module. Here is a brief summary:
- USDA’s 2021 Data shows that there are 9.4 million dairy cows in the U.S alone. These cows require huge amount of energy, land, and water, but are highly inefficient at producing food.
- Out of all the energy aiary cows consume via food, only 17% of that energy is dedicated to producing millk.
- Dairy farms are huge and concentrated as big corporations took over the industry. These large farms almost never graze their animals (which is essential to providing good nutrition and other benefits to animals) and they often mistreat cows by milking several times per day. The continual and extended process of impregnation, giving birth, and milking places strain on the physical well-being of cows, leading to health issues such as mastitis and a decrease in milk yield.
- Producing one glass of dairy milk results in almost 3 times more greenhouse gas emissions than plant-based milk and uses up to 9 times more land.
